TREATMENT
For this task we had to write our treatment. In order to do this we had to come up with:
Firstly, we began to brainstorm ideas on paper. In the end we came up with:
Then, we began to look at a potential plot and possible settings and locations as well as props. We concluded on a school setting and that our immigration plot will include a young Nigerian girl who has recently immigrated and is finding it difficult to integrate in her new British school.
OUR LOGO AND OUR PRODUCTION COMPANY
Through this process we decided to create a Youtube channel as YouTube quickly established itself as one of the most popular websites on the web, and its popularity shows no sign of declining anytime soon. This will help us reach a larger audience and gain interest in our overall product.
We then moved onto our logo. We thought that we should have an image in the centre of our logo but we weren't sure as to what the should be. I then thought that the image should be of phoenix as not only is it a part of our production name, but a phoenix can represent that someone has arisen from flames as a winner, beating all life challenges and defeating hard times. Therefore, a phoenix is a symbol of rebirth and we thought this was a good message to represent our production company and make us stand out as a brand. We thought that the phoenix logo would look best with the wings holding up the initials 'Rising Phoenix Productions' (our production company name) as it separates us from others and clearly shows our brand. I made a quick sketch and thought about potential colours and came up with the design above. Next step was to try and make it...
I chose to use the program Motion. It is used to create and edit motion graphics, titling for video production and film production, and 2D and 3D compositing for visual effects. However, i was not familiar with this software and had to research and look at some tutorials on Youtube. I found it quite straightforward and easy to use. Here is a screen recording of me making the logo: I used Final Cut Pro to edit the recording to make it look professional for our Youtube Channel Heres a direct link to our channel: Rising Pheonix https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmSXpr6C97Afgy2rgKPPkgA

WORKING TITLE
Initially we thought the film name should give away the storyline but not too much as we would want the audience to be captivated the moment they see the opening. This gave us many suggestions on what and where to look at for good movie ideas.
PLAN
I researched online for some tips on making a good movie title. Here is some helpful information I gathered:
Since we already had a rough idea from our planning and considerations first draft, we knew we wanted a nigerian girl as our main character. From this we started to brainstorm and looked for common Nigerian and African names. We thought that since we were making a docudrama shortly using the girls name would be straight forward and impressionable. We researched many African names and their meanings so we could carefully select an appropriate first and last name. In the end we chose 'Adah' as her first name and 'Ambibola' as her last name. This meant that when we would do our interviews we can ask whether it should just be 'Adah','Abimbola' or 'Adah Abimbola', and what sounds the most effective. This step was crucial in deciding our working title, as the character is essential to the film. We have come up with other ideas for possible working titles but this one is our favourite ands it is straight to the point and short which is a tip I learnt from researching online. This is the site we used to find a Nigerian name and its meaning: www.babble.com/baby-names/african-names/ FIRST NAME
We both really liked the alternate spelling of 'Ada' into 'Adah' and decided to use it as her first name
LAST NAME
We then looked for a last name, straight away we saw 'Abimbola' and loved the sound of 'Adah Abimbola' it sounded right and we choose it. we then looked at its meaning and also thought it added an interesting prospect to our short film as it means "born with wealth" and the ideas we have for our plot so far differ from this. however, we like the challenge of he name meaning prosperous 'Adah' and wealthy 'Abimbola' and the idea of her going from riches to rags rather than rags to riches as in her home country she was treated very differently to how she is now and she didn't expect the welcome she got in England.
I have also looked at doucudrama films that were named after individuals. OTHER POSSIBLE WORKING TITLES
OTHER POSSIBLE WORKING TITLES
This was a tricky decision as all three film name suggestions have different ways of representing the film. Adah ended up having the most votes however there wasn't much different in results. Most people said that Adah was either 'short' 'snappy' or 'catchy' whereas people who voted Abimbola said it represents her 'heritage' or simply has much more of a deeper meaning. My partner and I took these responses into consideration and combined them with our own opinions and research then concluded Adah would be the best choice to go with as we would want our film name to attract the audience and let the film explain itself not let the title confuse them or give away too much before they even watch the short film which I felt like the other name suggestions could possibly do.
Interestingly, one day after school I came across this on my Facebook of Uzo Aruba who didn't always love her Nigerian name. This is a clip from the International Day of the Girl rally, and I thought it ran true to the basis of my short film and being proud of your culture and your heritage. I thought I would share it on my blog as I found it really inspiring. Looking at the comments also made me realise that many women and girls can relate to Uzo and I feel that they could relate to our short film. FILM TITLE : ADAHOUR LOGLINECreated using Visme. SCRIPT WRITINGCreated using Visme. Free Online Presentation Software. ANALYSING REAL MEDIA SCRIPTS
Branded as one of Hollywood’s “perfect” scripts, the screenplay for Casablanca boasts powerful drama, intrigue, memorable characters and witty dialogue. From analysing this script I have learnt that formatting and paragraphs are important when making a script as well as the obvious; its content.
A lesson in breaking all the rules, Quentin Tarantino’s screenplay for Pulp Fiction defies traditional structure, Tarantino’s epic of post-modern cinema proved that there was a place for operatic violence, and pushed the boundaries of unconventional characters and storytelling. The film changed the face of modern cinema. From this script I have learnt that the action and dialogue is written under the same name and on a separate line to that of the dialogue. This shows that the dialogue and action is done by the same person.
Based on the actual case files of one of the most intriguing unsolved crimes in the nation's history, Zodiac is a thriller from David Fincher, director of "Seven" and "Fight Club." From this script I have learnt that you need to clearly state on your script where the scene takes place and on a separate line what happens and directions for the characters.
From this research I have learnt and observed the patterns:
TODOROV'S NARRATIVE THEORY
Todorov's narrative theory suggests that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored.
A film that follow these steps perfectly is Die Hard.
1. John McClane (Bruce Willis) is coming home to his family for Christmas and all is calm. (The equilibrium) 2. Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his team of terrorists take over the nakatomi building which is hosting a Christmas part of which McClane and his wife are attending. 3. (2 points of recognition) McClane isn't in the room when the terrorsits storm in so is able to move up the builiding when he hears screaming. People outside of the building realise there's a disruption when a police man's car is shot at from the building. 4. The police try sending in a SWAT team in which fails. The situation is solved by John McClane throwing Gruber out of a high floor window which kills him. 5. The equilibrium is restored when the police got McClane, his wife and the other hostages out of the building, and the McClanes leave in a police car. On the other hand, you can't apply the theory to all films. There are films which you can't apply this narrative theory to, such as Fight Club. 1. The movies starts with Edward Norton (who in this movie has no name so I will call him Edward) trying to cure his insomnia. 2. He discovers that when he cries at these support groups he is able to sleep. (Attempt to repair) 3. After some arguing Edward agress to hit him and punches him in the ear. After Tyler punches Edward in the stomcah and they start to fight. Afterward they go back to Tylers house, which is in terrible shape. Time goes on and they start to have other people fighting with them in the parking lot, until eventually they get to go into the basement of the bar to fight after it's closed and it is then called fight club. (Recognition of disruption) 4. Tyler goes into his boss's office and tries to blackmail saying he won't tell any of the company's secrets if he pays him. (attempt to repair the damage of disruption) 5. Tyler eventually tells Edward that fight club has evovled into Project Mayhem. (new equilibrium) Although, Todorov's theory is so flexible it could be argued that Fight Club could fit in to the theory. Every film unless it is in a sequel should end with a new equilibrium. Star Wars is a sequel, and even that has a new equilibrium at the end of every flim. My film will follow Todorov's theory. 1. Adah has recently immigrated from Nigeria and is nervous to start her 5th new school in England after being severely bullied at the previous 4 (Equilibrium) 2. The girls at her school are giving her a hard time and she wishes she was back home (The disruption) 3. She's getting teased by her class for getting something wrong she runs out crying (acknowledgement of the disruption) 4. She is sent to the counsellor who is trying to calm her down and assure her that things will get better (Attempt to repair) 5. She calls her mum in tears, swallows some pills, and dies. (New equilibrium) However we do have a flash forward at the start of her playing with the pills before the story begins so this defies the Todrov's narrative theory. After careful consideration we have chosen to redo our script soley as a voiceover, as we felt that this adheres to the codes and conventions of a docudrama and will be more effective in the final product.
STORYBOARDA storyboard is a graphic organizer in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence.
Here are some famous examples of storyboards below: 1. Alfred Hitchcock (director), Saul Bass (artist) PSYCHO 2. Steven Spielberg (director), Joe Alves (artist) JAWS 3. Francis Ford Coppola (director), Dean Tavoularis (artist) APOCALYPSE NOW 4. Joel and Ethan Coen (directors), J. Todd Anderson (artist) NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN Our Final Storyboard
We created our final storyboard using https://www.storyboardthat.com
It creates a professional and visually pleasing storyboard that will be very helpful when we are making our short film. I have taken into account Todrov's narrative theory clearly labelling the stories equilibrium, the disruption, acknowledgment of the disruption, attempt to repair the damage and then finally a new equilibrium |
